Stapelia. Dutch physician J. B. Stapel (d. 1636) is remem- bered by a carrion flower; the large flowers of the cactuslike Stapelia genus, containing some hundred species and having a very unpleasant, fetid odor. Native to South Africa, a few of these curiously marked species—variously colored and some- times marbled or barred—are grown in the greenhouse for their flowers. There is no record of whether the naming was meant as a compliment or insult. |
