cinque ports. From the 13th to the 17th century and even later the British crown granted special privileges to the ports of Hastings, Sandwich, Dover, Romaney, and Hythe, because they provided men and ships for the defense of the English Channel. The ports of Rye and Winchelsea were later added, but the fa- vored ports were still called cinque ports, from the Latin quinque, “five.” |
