bald eagle. This American eagle is so named because the feathers on the head of the adult are white, making it appear bald when seen from a distance. Said to be the most pictured bird in the world, the bald eagle appears on the Great Seal of the United States and on many U.S. coins and paper currency. There was some controversy over its choice for the great seal by the Second Continental Congress because it commonly steals fish from other hawks, but its majestic presence prevailed. It has also been called the bird of freedom, bird of Washington, calumet eagle, gray eagle, brown eagle, nun’s eagle, white- headed eagle, and national bird. |
