Baldwin apple. Loammi Baldwin (1740–1807), an American civil engineer, is known for building the Middlesex Canal be- tween Somerville and Lowell, Massachusetts, opened in 1803. But he is perhaps best known for the red or red-and-yellow Baldwin apple, which he originated several years later, one of the 10,000 or so apple varieties. A so-called winter apple, it is usually grown in the Northeast. |
