词汇 | bailiff |
词源 | bailiff; bailiff wand. Someone authorized to perform legal actions, such as a sheriff ’s deputy who carries out arrests. The word dates back to at least 1297 in England and derives from the Latin bajulus, carrier or manager. English bailiffs have even arrested dead people. When British playwright and politician Richard Brinsley Sheridan died penniless in 1816, a well- dressed man at the wake touched Sheridan on the forehead with his bailiff’s wand and declared that he was arresting him in the name of the king for a debt of £500. Since the corpse was arrested, the funeral and burial could not go on until Sheridan’s friends pulled out their purses and paid the man. See bailiwick. |
