baked alaska. Consisting of ice cream mounded on a cake base placed briefly in a hot oven to brown its blanket of me- ringue, baked alaska is among the most posh of desserts. It was created and named at New York’s Delmonico’s restaurant in 1876 in honor of the newly purchased Alaskan territory. An informant advises that a blow torch is now commonly used to make it.
