bagnio. A brothel, the word deriving from the Latin for bath. Originally, a bagnio was a bath or bathhouse, especially one with hot baths. However, to quote British author Thomas Wright’s A History of Domestic Manners and Sentiments in En- gland During the Middle Ages (1862), the bathhouses “were soon used to such an extent for illicit intrigues, that the name of a hot- house or bagnio became equivalent to that of a brothel.” |
