词源 | Cincinnatus. In the early days of the republic George Washington was called the Cincinnatus of America, after the hero of that name who in about 458 b.c. came out of retire- ment on his farm to lead the Roman army to victory. Return- ing to the plow, Cincinnatus again served as dictator many years later to successfully avert a civil war. Like Lucius Quinc- tius Cincinnatus, Washington was a simple, dignified man.
