children’s death. The terrible common name of this plant (Cicuta maculata) reflects the fact that children have died after mistaking its root for an edible carrot and eating it. It is also called “children’s bane,” “musquash root,” “beaver poison,” “spotted cowbane” and, most frequently, “water hemlock.” A member of the carrot family with feathery leaves, its roots con- tain a deadly alkaloid. It thrives on pond edges and in bogs. |
