Deseret alphabet. Members of the Mormon church from all over the world came to settle in what is now Utah when Brigham Young led the Mormons there across the desert. Many of them spoke no English, and Young and other church leaders felt they needed a better alphabet to teach them the language. Forsaking the standard English alphabet, which has only 26 let- ters to represent the approximately 43 sounds in English, they developed what they called the Deseret alphabet, which had a letter for each sound. Despite all their efforts, however, the al- phabet never became popular and all efforts to promote it were abandoned after Young’s death in 1877. See deseret.
