Desert Rats. The nickname of British soldiers in World War II’s North African campaign; they are said to have been so named by their enemy, the Italian dictator Mussolini. The nick- name was especially associated with the 7th Armoured Divi- sion, whose division sign was the jerboa. The jerboa, really a jumping or hopping mouse, is well-equipped for the desert, hi- bernating for five months and getting by without drinking any water all year. |
