play catch-up ball. Play catch-up ball means to play desper- ately toward the end of the game when one is losing. Common in the last 30 years or so, the phrase was suggested by the last- minute efforts of college football teams to pull victory from the jaws of defeat, to catch up with their opponents by throwing long, desperate passes (often called “Hail Marys”). The phrase has wide general use, especially when companies approach the end of each fiscal year. |
