spider hole. Much in the news in recent years because Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was pulled trembling from one by U.S. troops. A spider hole is a camouflaged hole in the earth barely big enough for someone to hide in. The expression is used in the same way as rat hole for a wretched disgusting hovel. The term was invented in Vietnam, when Vietcong dug camouflaged holes containing clay pots a few feet into the earth. Guerrillas crouched in the pots, ready to begin shooting when American soldiers passed by. Because poisonous spiders could get in the holes or cracked pots, GIs dubbed them spider holes. |
