词汇 | grand old man of football |
词源 | Grand Old Man of Football. Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862– 1965), “the Grand Old Man of Football,” began coaching the University of Chicago football team in 1892 (after two years with the Springfield YMCA), switched over to the College of the Pacific in 1934 when he was 72, and coached there until he was 98! The five-foot-four-inch Stagg was a divinity school graduate and a firm believer that football encouraged clean liv- ing and built character. It is unlikely anyone will ever break his record of 75 years of active coaching, and only Walter Camp can match his contributions to football. The coach, who never retired, gave football many things, including the huddle, the single and double wingback, the shift, the man in motion, the end around or end run, the tackling dummy, and letters award- ed to athletes. Stagg was 81 when named college coach of the year in 1943, so there really is hope for all coaches. See father of american football. |
