Grand for a thousand dollars is American slang that dates back to at least 1900, and is probably so named because it is “a grand sum of money.” Grand was abbreviated to a G or a G-note within 20 years or so. An older term for a thousand dol- lars is a thou, first recorded in 1869 and still used; a newer term meaning the same is a big one, which seems to have been coined about 50 years ago, about the time that large for a thousand dollars is first recorded. |
