Grand Guignol. Violent, sensational plays were the staple of the Théâtre du Grand Guignol in Paris up until recent times, these short plays giving us the name Grand Guignol for such works, or the staging of them. The theater took its name, ulti- mately, from the French guignol, “puppet or marionette,” in re- lation to the violence and brutality of Punch-and-Judy shows. |
