词汇 grandfather clause
词源
grandfather clause. A clause used by some southern states in their constitutions after 1890, in which they disenfranchised blacks by stipulating that new literacy and property qualifica- tions for voting applied only to those whose ancestors did not have the right to vote before 1867. Since no blacks could vote or had ancestors who could vote before that time, this meant that no blacks were permitted to vote.
