This is a supersti- tion involving the age 63 (a number that is the product of the “magic numbers” 7 and 9) and holding that if you survived that dangerous year you would live to a ripe old age. The word cli- macteric itself, which also refers to the female menopause, de- rives from a Greek word meaning “a critical period.” |
