词汇 | three blind mice |
词源 | three blind mice. Only “Hickory, dickery, dock” rivals the jingle “Three Blind Mice” as a popular rhyme: “Three blind mice, three blind mice, / See how they run, see how they run! / They all run after the farmer’s wife, / Who cut off their tails with a carving knife, / Did you ever see such a sight in you life / As three blind mice?” Several historians have linked these words with three men whom England’s Queen Mary I put to death during her reign, the farmer’s wife being “Bloody Mary” herself. In the U.S. today three blind mice is often a taunt shout- ed at baseball umpires. |
