In 1918 Viennese figure skater Alois Lutz devel- oped the lutz jump, in which a skater jumps from the back outer edge of one skate and makes a full rotation in the air in the op- posite direction of the skating curve, landing on the back outer edge of the opposite skate. By the time of the Salt Lake Winter Games of the 2002 Olympics, the word flutz had been anony- mously coined, probably by a coach or judge, to describe a poorly executed lutz, specifically one made by a skater who takes off on the wrong edge of his or her skate. Flutz is a combi- nation of flip and lutz, the flip being the jump that most closely resembled the lutz. See choctaw.
