词汇 st swithin-s day
词源
St. Swithin’s Day.
St. Swithin’s day if thou doest rain—
For forty days it will remain;
St. Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days twill rain na mair— These doggerel lines contain a well-known weather myth popu- lar as early as the 12th century. The legend claims that St. Swithin, or Swithun, a ninth-century bishop of Winchester and counselor to King Egbert, had been buried in the churchyard outside the north wall of Winchester minster, where the “sweet rains of heaven might fall upon him as he wished and he be trodden under foot by those who entered the church.” A centu- ry after his death it was decided that he should be canonized for miraculous cures he performed and his remains were to be reburied within the cathedral. The day was set, but as a miracu- lous sign of Bishop Swithin’s displeasure, it began to rain on that day and rained for 40 days and 40 nights, causing the monks to abandon their plans. The date selected for his reinter- ment was July 15, 971, and July 15 has ever since been generally regarded as St. Swithin’s Day.
