词汇 | handsome frank |
词源 | Handsome Frank. The nickname of Franklin Pierce (1804– 69), the 14th president, who was a friend of Nathaniel Haw- thorne and appointed him to the consulship at Liverpool, England. As vain as he was handsome, the genial Pierce was rumored to be an alcoholic in his late years. His friend, the dig- nified Millard Fillmore, America’s 13th president, rivaled Pierce in looks, as did 29th president Warren Harding, who carried on several affairs during his blessedly short term in office and had the looks of a matinee idol. Other good-looking presidents in- clude James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford (who once worked as a male model). JFK was (or could be) charming rather than handsome. The most foppish of presidents was Martin Van Buren, who was called Petticoat Pet, among about a dozen insulting nicknames. See ok; presidential nicknames. |
