To be stumped for “to be baffled” has its origins in the stumps that American settlers had to pull from the earth af- ter felling trees—some stumps were so big and deep-rooted that they perplexed the pioneers. The expression is first record- ed in 1812: “John Bull was a little stumped when he saw [Broth- er] Jonathan’s challenge.” |
