词汇 paths of glory
词源
paths of glory. The antiwar film Paths of Glory (1957) has been named by the National Film Registry, administered by the Library of Congress, as one of the 200 or so films up to this date to be preserved in the National Library because of its “histori- cal, cultural and aesthetic significance.” The film’s title, as well as the commonly used phrase, comes from a line in British poet Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” (1750): “The paths of glory lead but to the grave.” Another line reads “Forbade to wade through slaughter to a throne.” See far from the madding crowd.
