词汇 | pantomime |
词源 | pantomime. Rome’s only original contribution to Western theater was pantomime, a silent individual performance by a pantomimus, an actor who danced or acted in mask and cloak and did not speak a word, unlike the earlier Greek mimi, who spoke and sang while performing. This purely Roman creation was a favorite of audiences in Rome, who idolized the pantomi- mi and often made them rich. Just one pantomimus played each of the roles in a play, wearing a different mask for each charac- ter, while all the words were sung by a choir. Pantomime be- came so popular in Rome that it drove both tragedy and comedy from the stage. One of its most accomplished practi- tioners was Bathyllus, whose name came to be used for any pantomime actor. Paris was the name of two Roman panto- mime performers. The first remained the emperor Nero’s fa- vorite until he was executed by Nero for beating him in an act- ing contest. The second took the first Paris’s name and ironically met the same fate 20 years later in a.d. 87, when the emperor Domitian had him put to death. |
