A long-used abbreviation for the Latin phrase Requies- cat in pace, “May he (she) rest in peace,” or Requiescant in pace, “May they rest in peace.” The abbreviation is commonly found on tombstones and mourning cards. It is only a coincidence that the first letters of English rest in peace are the same as those of the Latin phrases.
