词汇 | ringing burning ears |
词源 | ringing (burning) ears. At least as far back as Pliny the Elder (a.d. 24–79) in his Natural History (a.d. 77) people have be- lieved that if their ears were ringing or burning others were talking about them somewhere. Writers have even claimed that if the sensation occurred in the right ear the talk would be complimentary, uncomplimentary if in the left ear. Pliny met his end in the great eruption of Vesuvius. He went out the day after the eruption to study it, a pillow wrapped around his head to protect himself against falling rocks, but was asphyxiated by the sulfurous fumes. |
