ring finger. This name for the fourth finger of the human hand (including the thumb as a finger) has been traced back to about the year 1000. Today it most commonly is given to the fourth finger of the left hand, on which wedding rings are worn (because the left hand is closer to the heart than the right). It was in the past called the leech finger because doctors (a doctor was once called a leech) often used it for testing.
