highbinder. A highbinder can be a swindler and cheat, espe- cially a confidence man, or a gangster or rowdy. The word, first used in its latter meaning, derives from a gang of ruffians called the Highbinders that plagued New York City about 1806. Later their name was applied (in the lower case) to members of American-Chinese secret societies believed to be employed in blackmail and assassination. |
