slug. It is hard to find anything good to say about the slimey slug, which is technically a snail-like terrestrial gastropod with no shell that feeds on leafy garden crops. Interestingly, the slug takes its name from the Scandinavian sluggje, a heavy, slow person. In fact, in English the word slug meant a fat person be- fore it was applied to the garden pest. Like the shark and the shrimp, the slug is named for a person sharing its characteris- tics, not the other way around. See snail. |
