slugger. The term to slug, “to hit hard,” has been used in base- ball since the 1860s, and slugger for a hard or heavy hitter is re- corded as early as 1883. But slugger was used in reference to a hard-hitting boxer before this, as well as to a cricket batter. Pos- sibly the word derives from the early expression to hit with a slug, that is, a piece of lead fired from a gun. |
