词汇 | small fry |
词源 | small fry. In her epochal Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe introduced small fry (“smaller fry”) to describe chil- dren, but fry had been used in this sense as early as 1697. Both expressions refer to the fry, “or young, of salmon, her- ring and other fish.” The word derives from the Norse frae “seed,” meaning the berry or seedlike masses of eggs these fish produce. |
