词汇 | shawinigan handshake |
词源 | Shawinigan handshake. To give someone a Shawinigan handshake means “to strangle him.” The term comes from the mill town of Shawinigan in Quebec, Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien’s hometown. It seems that the prime minister once “literally wrung the neck of a protester who got close to him at a Flag Day rally in Ottawa” (New York Times October 28, 1998), and Canadians took to calling any such throttling a “Shawinigan handshake.” |
