upstage. Upstage, in theatrical talk, refers to the back of the stage, while downstage refers to the part of the stage nearest the audience. The expression to upstage, “to divert attention or praise from,” comes from the practice of an actor overshadow- ing another actor by moving upstage and forcing him to play with his back to the audience. The expression dates back to the early 20th century. |
