词汇 upshot
词源
upshot. As far back as the early 16th century, an upshot meant the last shot in an archery contest, the shot that often determined the outcome of a match by forcing one archer to drop out and an- other to raise himself up in the standings. By the end of the centu- ry the now obsolete archery term had wider currency and came to mean any result or conclusion. Shakespeare, in fact, was one of the first to use the new word, in Hamlet: “So shall you hear . . . of accidental judgements . . . and in this upshot, purposes mistook.”
