词汇 | upper class |
词源 | upper class. Class was used as early as the mid-17th century in England for a division of society, higher and lower orders being previously used. The term lower class was employed as early as 1772, while upper class is recorded about half a centu- ry later in 1826 and middle class in 1830. Upper and upper ranks (1825) are also first recorded in England, while little- used upper 10 or upper 10,000 (1844) originated in the U.S., as did the upper crust (1850) for the upper classes or aris- tocracy. Often these terms do not indicate wealth but social status, as when Maupassant writes in his story “How He Got The Legion of Honor”: “They lived in Paris, like many rich middle-class people.” |
