词汇 | up the spout |
词源 | up the spout. Spout in this sense is a 19th-century slang word for an elevator on which pawnbrokers lifted hocked goods up- stairs to be stored. Pawned articles thus went up the spout and were often never seen by the customer again. In time, the ex- pression came to mean something gone forever. |
