词汇 | upholsterer |
词源 | upholsterer. An upholsterer was originally a worker hired by a merchant to “hold up the goods” so that they could be seen by prospective buyers—he was a “holder upper” and was, in fact, first called an upholder. Over the years, this same worker came to repair the goods he had held up. By the 17th century he was being called an upholsterer, his work consisting of repairing, finishing, or making articles of furniture. |
