the Hadza; Piraha. There are abundant lists of people who have accumulated great fortunes, but what of their opposites, people often called “primitives” who don’t want much of any- thing? Linguist Peter Ladefoged (1925–2006) did find at least a few of them in his travels to catalog the world’s 6,000 languages. “The Piraha,” he wrote, “live with little thought for the morrow; [and] the Hadza have fewer possessions than anyone I know.” |
