词汇 | the english language |
词源 | the English language. English is spoken, fluently or haltingly, over one-fifth of the world’s surface. Anywhere from 800 million to 1.5 billion people speak the language today with some degree of proficiency, including at least 400 million native speakers, leading one writer to note that “the sun never sets on English- speaking countries.” British scholar Tom McArthur in The En- glish Language (1998), lists 113 of what he terms “territories” (nations, national possessions, colonies, etc.) where English is either an official language or a lingua franca (i.e., a language used for communication between groups of people who speak different languages). This is more than twice as many territories as the English language’s nearest rival, French. McArthur goes on to give a list of 232 “territories, including the initial 113, where English is spoken to some extent, often as a global lingua franca. Even China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Iran, and Iraq are on this last list. To keep these figures in perspective, however, re- member that there are some 6,700 languages spoken in the world today. See the sun never sets on the british empire. |
