词汇 | gladstone bag |
词源 | Gladstone bag; Gladstone wines. At least one writer claims that English statesman and orator William Ewart Gladstone (1809–98) never carried the Gladstone bag named after him. Neither did the four-time prime minister invent the light, hinged leather bag, but he did do much traveling in his long public career and the flexible bag was made with the conve- nience of travelers in mind. Gladstone’s name was given to cer- tain cheap clarets—Gladstone wines—because he lowered the customs duty on French wines while chancellor of the exche- quer in 1860. A two-seated, four-wheeled carriage also paid him honor. Gladstone has been rated as the most inspiring and among the five greatest of British prime ministers, but his pri- vate life sometimes provoked comment. Until he was well past 75, for example, he made it his habit to walk the streets of Lon- don at night trying to persuade prostitutes to convert to a dif- ferent way of life. When the prime minister left office for the last time, he was 85 years old. |
