gladiator. These were originally prisoners of war, condemned criminals, slaves, and even volunteers who fought each other at public shows in ancient Rome. Sometimes women were among the combatants and, indeed, fought each other in the arena. Gladiators take their name from the Latin gladius, sword, which many of them used as weapons. Today their name is giv- en to anyone, including a boxer, who engages in a fight or controversy. |
