give ’em hell. Harry Truman and his supporters didn’t origi- nate this Americanism during the Presidential election of 1948. The expression has been traced back to the early 19th century and has military origins. In 1851 it was recorded in Harper’s Magazine: “At daybreak old Rily shouted, ‘Forward and give them h-ll!’ ” Four years earlier, during the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War, General Zachary Taylor had exhorted his men to “Give ’em hell!” after the enemy launched a fierce at- tack.
