glittering generalities. American attorney Rufus Choate (1799–1859) coined this term for clichés, empty words, and platitudes in a letter to a friend about the Declaration of Inde- pendence: “the glittering and sounding generalities of natural rights which make up the Declaration of Independence.” Less well-known, but truer, is Ralph Waldo Emerson’s remark when he heard of Choate’s coinage: “Glittering generalities! They are blazing ubiquities!” |
