词汇 | calabash |
词源 | calabash. Since the mid-19th century a calabash has meant an empty-headed person, someone with nobody home up- stairs, in U.S. slang. Calabash in this sense derives from the gourd of the same name, which comes from the Arabic qar ’ah yābisah, “empty gourd.” Sherlock Holmes’s famous pipe, read- ers may recall, was made from a hollowed-out calabash gourd. |
