butterflies; butterfly kisses. The nervous butterflies that we sometimes feel in our stomachs are a fluttering sensation, which accounts for this Americanism, first recorded in the classic W. C. Fields movie The Bank Dick (1940). Similarly, the light soft fluttering of one’s eyelashes against a loved one’s cheek is called a “butterfly kiss,” this expression dating back at least to late 19th-century England. See butterfly; float like a butterfly. |
