词汇 hit the wall
词源
hit the wall. Though it is ignored in all dictionaries, so far as I know, this expression was born in the mid-1970s, when mara- thon running became popular in the United States. The wall is a point in a 26-mile 385-yard marathon run (usually at the 18- to-20 mile mark) when a runner seems to lose everything physically, hits up against a wall, so to speak, and can go no farther—at least not at his or her customary pace. It can be a terrible feeling, especially if one hasn’t trained properly for the marathon, but most runners pull themselves over the wall and go on to finish. Figuratively, the phrase is now used to describe any situation in life that stops a person’s progress and seems to make it impossible to go on.
