词源	Hobbesian. English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) wrote in his chief work, The Leviathan (1651), that man is a natu- rally selfish creature whose life is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” Therefore, he argued, an absolute monarchy, a levia- than or strong man is needed to control man’s natural “condition of war of everyone against everyone.” This has become generally known as the Hobbesian philosophy, or Hobbesism.
