To go to sleep, as in “We all hit the hay early after that first day of climbing.” Obviously, all the hay around sug- gests a rural origin and the phrase is first recorded in 1880s America. It may even derive from hit the sack, the sack in the phrase meaning a sack containing bedding like straw since the 17th century. |
