Partridge recorded this synonym for a hired killer or assassin in 1963, but it must be older, as hitter is recorded four years earlier and to hit for “to kill or assassinate” goes back to 1942. At least one source credits mobster Louis “Lepke” Buchalter with coining hit “as a euphemism for contract mur- der.” The term hit woman seems to have come in with women’s lib in about 1974, and hit list for a list of people to be assassinat- ed dates back to at least 1976. |
